Benefit auctions, fall, 2010
I have been asked to contribute photographs to three auctions this fall, one to benefit the environment, one to benefit photography, and the third to benefit geology.  To Wild Earth Guardians, Santa Fe, (www.wildearthguardians.org) I am donating two photographs, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2004, Ed. 1/50, and Winter, Taos Pueblo, 1970, Ed. 1/50.  The auction will be held at The Bishop's Lodge, Santa Fe, September 24.  For the Texas Photographic Society's Collectors' Print Auction this year I am contributing another photograph from the Purepecha Series, The Emperor's Bench, Tzintzuntzan, Michoacan, Mexico, 2004, Ed. 6/50. The auction catalog will be posted on the Texas Photographic Society website (www.texasphoto.org) in late September.  The photographs will be shown at the Davis Gallery, Austin, October 17-22, with the auction on October 22.  Finally, I am contributing Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2004,  Ed. 2/50, to the Geological Society of America Foundation (www.gsafweb.org) for their silent auction to be held at the Geological Society of America annual meeting in Denver, October 31-November 3, 2010.  (9/6/10)

Spring/summer, 2010, activities
I've had to postpone several planned trips to Mexico and have been spending the time printing a backlog of negatives.  By the first of the year I hope to have a good number of new photographs ready and return to Mexico in 2011.  I have added a few of the new photographs to the website.  (9/6/10)

Fotofest
In March, 2010, I attended Fotofest portfolio review in Houston, Texas.  Fotofest is the oldest and largest portfolio review event in the U. S.  I showed a portfolio of platinum/palladium photographs from the Purepecha and Mexico Series.  Reviewers invited me to participate in two shows in 2011, one at the Art Museum of the Americas at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D. C., and the other at the Fotoencuentros 11 festival in Spain. I enjoyed visiting with the reviewers and seeing the work of the other attendees, although I must say conceptual photography has pretty well taken over Fotofest.  Strong traditional photography still seems to be admired, though.  (9/6/10)

2009 Texas Photographic Society Collectors' Print Auction
The Texas Photographic Society has invited me to participate in the Society's Collectors' Print Auction which will be held in Austin September 11 at the Davis Gallery.  The 80 framed photographs by some of the U.S.'s foremost fine-art photographers including Dan Burkholder, Keith Carter, Chip Hooper, Cole Thompson, Hiroshi Watanabe, and Kim Weston will be on view in the Gallery beginning September 8.  Silent bidding will continue until 8:15 pm September 11.  For out-of-town bidders the auction catalog will be available on the TPS website www.texasphoto.org.  The Collectors' Print Auction is TPS's major fund- raising event and serves as vital support for TPS programming.  This year I have contributed a platinum/palladium photograph from the Purepecha Series, Zenaida, Michoacan, 2008, 1/50.  An enlarged image of the photograph may be seen in the Purepecha section of my website.  (8/11/09)

Photolucida
A little over a week ago I got back from the 2009 Photolucida portfolio review in Portland, Oregon.  Portfolio reviews are multi-day gatherings of photographers and reviewers in which photographers have the opportunity to show their work to representatives from galleries, art dealers, museums, and publishers.  Reviews also provide an excellent opportunity to meet and visit with other photographers and see a variety of work ranging from traditional to contemporary.  Sixty reviewers and 160 photographers attended the 2009 Review.  I showed a portfolio of 15 matted platinum/palladium prints from my Purepecha Series to 18 reviewers.  I enjoyed the experience and was pleased with the manner in which the photographs were received.  A museum curator is presenting his collections committee with a request to purchase a portfolio of ten photographs, a university art museum curator is checking on the possibility of a show and talk, two journal editors recommended I submit a selection of prints for possible publication, an owner of a well-known New England gallery commented "These are important photographs," and last, but not least, one of the reviewers purchased one of my prints during the Review.  Based on these encouraging results I am hoping to be able to attend the oldest and largest U.S. portfolio review, Fotofest, in Houston next year.  (5/15/09)

Group show, Gallery Two-Ten, Colorado Springs, Colorado, May 1-30, 2009
Twelve colorado photographers have been invited to participate in Images Beyond the Lens, a classic-to-contemporary exhibit of fine-art photography and photo illustration at Gallery Two-Ten in Colorado Springs.  I will be showing 14 platinum/palladium prints including photographs made in Michoacan in 2008.  Gallery Two-Ten is a new gallery of contemporary art in the downtown area, and this is its first photography show.  It was named "Best Art Gallery 2008" by the Colorado Springs Gazette.  For more infornation call 719-632-2132 or visit www.gallerytwo-ten.com.  (4/20/09)

New gallery representation
Steve Zeifman, gallerist and owner of the Box Set Gallery (an on-line gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico), has invited me to be one of the artists represented by the Gallery.  As noted on their site, "The Box Set Gallery represents photographers and other fine artists who present their prints as box sets.  These unique and custom-made portfolios provide the collector with a complete experience of the artist's work as well as an opportunity to invest affordably in the artist."  In addition to portfolios the Gallery also offers limited edition prints by the artists.  The Gallery will offer my platinum/palladium photographs as individual photographs, and in 2009 will offer a portfolio of platinum/palladium photographs from the Purepecha Series in a fine custom-made portfolio box.  As always, all of the photographs will be made by me in my darkroom.  I am very pleased to be represented  by Steve and recommend that you visit his very attractive website www.boxsetgallery.com where you may see my photographs as well as the work of the other artists.  (11/20/08)

Exhibition of photographs from the Millennial Collection, Nov. 1, 2008-Jan. 15, 2009
An exhibition of photographs from the Millennial Collection of Texas Tech University will be held at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, Lubbock, Texas.  A gallery talk and panel discussion by Rick Dingus, Professor of Art, Texas Tech University, and others, will be held on November 6; an opening reception on November 7; and presentations by visiting scholars Jessica May, Assistant Curator of Photographs, Amon Carter Museum, and Andrew Liccardo, Assistant Professor, School of Art, Northern Illinois University, on November 17.  The Millennial Collection, housed in the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library at Texas Tech University, is a joint documentary project of individual portfolios by professional and student artists.  In 2001 the University purchased a portfolio of 21 of my Southwest and Mexico photographs for the Collection.  Several of the photographs will be included in the group show.  For more information contact the Center at www.lhuca.org.  (10/22/08)

2008 Collectors' Print Auction, Texas Photographic Society
The Texas Photographic Society has invited me to participate again this year in their Collectors' Print Auction to be held in Austin, October 17, 2008.  The photographs will also be exhibited at the Davis Gallery in Austin prior to the Auction.  I am donating Tarahumara Boys, Chihuahua, 1981, Edition No. 6/50, in platinum/palladium.  The photograph is a striking image of three Tarahumara boys who were employed as day laborers in Batopilas and had taken a break to drink a refresco in the town's general store.  The Collectors' Print Auction offers photographs from many well-known and excellent photographers (at good prices!) and is the Society's principal fundraiser.  Later this summer you may visit the Society's website www.texasphoto.org for more information and to request an auction catalog.  (7/22/08)

Mexico trip
In January/February, 2008, I spent four weeks in the Patzcuaro, Michoacan, area continuing to photograph the Purepecha.  The work went well, and I was invited to make photographs of several families, mainly potters and woodworkers.  I exposed about a hundred sheets of 8x10 film, and several weeks ago I finally finished developing and proofing the negatives.  I am very pleased with the results; I have about 15-20 I am going to commit to platinum/palladium.  That, plus reprinting some earlier negatives, are going to keep me occupied for most of the summer.  I've posted some of the proofs on the website.  They are in the Purepecha Series and can be identified by the copyright date "2008."  I will post the final prints as I finish them.  (7/2/08)

New Print Prices
Beginning January 1, 2009, I am raising my print prices, in part to cover increased costs of material and travel.  I do believe, and I hope the potential buyer believes, that the quality and historical significance of the photographs justify the new prices.  In the future, prints made from 8x10 negatives will be priced at $600 matted, and prints from 4x5 negatives will be priced at $300 matted.  (7/2/08, revised 1/2/09)

Colorado Springs gallery to close July 1, 2008; representation by Afterimage Gallery
I have closed my gallery in Colorado Springs in order to devote more time to photographing and printing.  The gallery has been a worthwhile experience, but being a merchant, even for only two days a week, requires a considerable investment of time, time which I really need for travel and darkroom work.  In the future I will still maintain my website, but beginning January 1, 2009, I will be represented by Afterimage Gallery in Dallas, Texas (www.afterimagegallery.com).  The Afterimage Gallery, owned and directed by Ben Breard, is one of the oldest galleries of fine photography in the U.S. and is a member of the prestigious Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD).  (7/2/08. revised 1/2/09)
